Phil & Friends Fine Tuning at Sweetwater
On Sunday (September 26th), Phil Lesh & Friends finished 5 nights of public dress rehearsals at the Sweetwater Station in Larkspur, California. Phil wanted to play in front of a live crowd before kicking off an east coast swing. All 5 shows were sold by word of mouth - and tickets for the venue (capacity 150) were gone in a flash. Lesh was backed by bandmates Larry Campbell, Jackie Greene, Steve Molitz and John Molo. Barry Sless and Teresa Williams were also in the mix.
The setlists featured Grateful Dead nuggets like "Terrapin Station," "Alabama Getaway," and "West L.A. Fadeaway," along with Lesh's cover of Ryan Adams' "Let it Ride."
Last night (September 30th), Phil & Friends opened a series of east coast shows with the Allman Brothers Band at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.

i am not excited by phils lead guitarist campbell. he plays the same old tired riffs every night. no improvising, nothing new or stimulating. he is aggressive but its the same old song every solo he throws out there. dump campbell and bring in barry sluess,a real guitarist. i quit going to phil shows. his last great band that had quality was with jimmy herring. phil himself is awesome and i do keep up with him. peace.

Made the road trip to Charlotte the other day to see Phil, with the Allman Brothers opening. Seemed like a bit of an off day for Phil And Friends. The Allman Brothers were intense and definitely worth making the trip for.
I'm not sure what was ... ah I don't know, maybe the set list was crappy. But the show was poorly mixed for one. None of the guitar leads were brought out. Mix was sort of flat, the cameras weren't following what was going on very well either.
P&F should hire the Allman's mix man, and camera men. Those guys did a great job for the Brothers.
